This sequel documents the author’s journey from a simple farmhouse near Chicago to a number of amazing work locations far afield. The author contrasts his risk taking as a Midwestern youth with his life today, focused on his family and the joys of geologic discovery. He also makes numerous observations on the oil business and the differences between foreign workplaces regarding ethics, character, religions, customs, and etiquette. Fruitcake Hill and Beyond is a spirited read for those currently practicing or preparing to work in the arena of international exploration, petroleum service, development, the State Department, or other expatriate positions in foreign countries and missions.
About the Author
Gerald J. Kuecher grew up in a Catholic family of 13 children in the southwestern suburbs of Chicago in the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s. Gerald completed his B.S. at Western Illinois University in 1973, his M.S. at Northeastern Illinois in 1982, and his Ph.D. at Louisiana State University in 1994. Between these dates and until his partial retirement in 2013, Gerald lived and worked as an expatriate consultant petroleum geologist in a number of intriguing locations, including St. Thomas of the US Virgin Islands, Trinidad, the Nile Delta and Gulf of Suez regions of Egypt, the Caspian Sea region of Kazakhstan, the Celtic Sea of Ireland, the Malacca Straits and the Natuna Sea of Indonesia, the eastern sector of Saudi Arabia, and the Gulf of Mexico. His interpretation of international cultures, religions and people in remote regions is interesting, humorous, and balanced.
Fruitcake Hill and Beyond A Sequel to Fruitcake Hill 1st Gerald J Kuecher
Fruitcake Hill and Beyond: A Sequel to Fruitcake HillBy Gerald J. Kuecher
This short memoir traces the life of its author, a petroleum geologist, from boyhood on the outer fringe of the Chicago metropolis to assignments in exotic locations to retirement in Texas. The attraction of the book arises from the frank and intimate self-description of the author as his life unfolds over time, space and diverse cultures. Although the writing is not sugar-coated, it manages to convey an overall glow of optimism and faith. And it demonstrates and memorializes the author’s respect and affection for the people and places he has been privileged to encounter.
Gerald provides insight into the sometimes difficult life of his large (13 children), loving, Roman Catholic family with their views, foibles, generosity and prejudices. There are detailed portraits of his parents, friends, mentors and colleagues. Each vignette is set in time and culture. Throughout, the author frankly exposes his own hopes, fears and shortcomings and his efforts to overcome them. And while his view of other cultures from the perspective of a Western scientist and as an employee of the petroleum industry are often critical he is also open to the beauties of other cultures and the people living within them.
He is loving to his wife and children and generous to his teachers and mentors. And yet, despite his easygoing and friendly nature, a sense of loneliness hangs over his descriptions of his long years abroad without his family. Even so he energetically embraces the scientific work enlivened by new friends and experiences. He climbs volcanoes in Indonesia, plays softball and other sports and escapes various difficulties and dangers with optimism and humor.
In the ever-shrinking world and global economy of the Twenty-First Century his story will resonate with young people whose lives will feature multiple jobs set in foreign venues, languages and cultures. Now, in active retirement, he must learn to live again with his wife and family. He faces the deaths of his beloved father and his brother John. And, after all his adventures, he still is full of wonder and continues to be emotionally touched by everyday experiences. He retains his boyish enthusiasm for geology, his strong love of faith and family, and continues to celebrate our miraculous world and his life in it.

Fruitcake Hill and Beyond A Sequel to Fruitcake Hill 1st Gerald J Kuecher Reviews
Gerald Kuecher gives a great joy and enthusiam to the readers in his second book again. Many congrats and wishing him success in his life.
This book is phenominal. Had the pleasure of reading the first book, Fruitcake Hill about a Irish Catholic family of 15 in the Chicago area. This books follows the author through his world travels. He worked all over the world. Very moving closing thoughts of his father. Loved it!!!
Having much enjoyed the author’s first book I was excited to learn about the recent release of the sequel. Mr. Kuecher’s latest book is a fascinating account about a large Midwestern Catholic family as experienced by a middle child who grew up in a farmhouse with 6 older and 6 younger siblings. The author gives a very candid and revealing account of his life starting from early childhood through his college years and challenging international career to his retirement. Fruitcake Hill and Beyond is a thoroughly enjoyable read with a host of memorable characters and amusing events.
